It took nearly two years, but Van Wenda has finally posted new videos on YouTube. “I thought it was called ‘The YouTube’ like ‘The Facebook,’” a confused Flava Dave questions.

“99 Luftballons,” “The Rose,” and “Hello/Jolene” are the new videos shot and cut by local filmmaker Nate Beyerlin.

“At first he hid them under cryptic titles to challenge our fans to find them, but we decided it was best to actually use ‘Van Wenda’ because many of our fans really are challenged,” adds Thor Sexy. “Now we’re up to about twelve views, which sounds about right.”

Van Wenda a Sports Radio Staple PDF Print E-mail

Cuts from Van Wenda’s debut EP have become favorites on sports radio station KJEO 1240 am in Corvallis/Albany. “It’s sports radio, but at least it’s radio,” rationalizes bassist Neddy Lee. “The midvalley really knows how to rock.”

Tracks such as “Tainted Love” and “The Rose” are used as high-energy bumps in and out of breaks during the popular “Joe Beaver Show” and other programming on KJEO, the Beavers’ flagship station. “We’re a Eugene band, but we’re not necessarily Duck or Beaver fans, although I really like beaver, if you know what I mean,” adds guitarist Dr. Krankenstein.

“AC/DC and Survivor weren’t really loud enough for our shows, so we’re glad we found Van Wenda,” says KJEO producer and local hip-hop artist Axent. “They’re about as loud and sloppy as the Beavers’ offense this fall.”

“The great thing about sports is the betting,” chimes in vocalist Tommy Love. “Sports talk stations like KJEO give me the information I need to take some coin off music geeks like Thor Sexy.”

Rock Star Defends, Praises Van Wenda PDF Print E-mail

As Van Wenda was throwing down its high-octane rock show at the now annual New Year’s Eve show at the Cooler, a member of the opening band questioned why a cover band was on the bill.

“A cover band? Van Wenda’s no cover band!” exclaimed local rock icon Jason Kelly, a veteran of the legendary Toad in the Hole and, more recently, Campfire Punk. “You’re missing the point. They play it like they hate it. It’s like they’re driving a stolen Ford Pinto on its rims, being chased by the police, and simultaneously destroying it and redeeming it.”

Van Wenda Records at Sprout City PDF Print E-mail

Showing they're just as fast in the studio as they are blitzing through a pop hit, Van Wenda recorded its first demo/EP at Sprout City Studios in a single day, on April 16, with Thaddeus Moore and a class of sound-engineering students.

"It was awesome and really funny," said Thaddeus. "They might be cover songs, but they're really original."

Singer Tom, a.k.a. Tommy Love, one-taked every vocal track. "He [Thaddeus] kept saying, 'That was dope,' and it was really pissing me off, until Aaron told me that 'dope' meant 'good,' kind of like when the kids say 'bad' and they mean 'good,'" said Tommy.

"The important thing is that the drums sound great. Thaddeus is a drummer, so he really knew what he was doing," drummer Dave said. "And the rest of the instruments sound good too, if you're into that kind of thing."

Bass player Annette could not be reached for comment, but Dave's heard her cranking it up at all hours of the day and night, so she must like it.

"It was my idea," confided guitarist Nick of working with Thaddeus. "We got a super recording, done in a day, and the price was right. I think I should get an executive producer credit for that."

Demos will be available for free at Van Wenda when fans sign up for our e-mail list or you can listen here online.

Van Wenda Forced to Adopt Stage Names to Maintain Anonymity PDF Print E-mail

As Van Wenda heads into a series of shows at popular college bars, its members will adopt stage names for safety purposes.  "Our number one goal is safety," says drummer Flava Dave.  "That's why I can't tell you my real name."  Neither can guitarist Dr. Krankenstein, vocalist Tommy Love, bassist Neddy Lee, nor multi-instrumentalist Thor Sexy.

"Tommy Love was the first to use a new handle," says Thor Sexy.  "But my nickname's the best, so screw him."

"Too many ladies have been stalking me lately," remarked the good doctor.

Van Wenda Denies Any By-Tor Connection PDF Print E-mail

Van Wenda members deny any connection to or prior knowledge of By-Tor and the Snow Dogs, after the Rush tribute band's wildly successful debut on New Year's Eve.  "That guy's voice in so high, he must be a eunuch," quipped Van Wenda guitarist Nick. Repeatedly tied to the progressive wannabes for months, Van Wenda continues to distance itself from the upstarts. "Those guys have  been following us around for months--at practices, gigs, whatever--get a freakin' life" added Van Wenda drummer Dave. "Those guys must have been playing to a tape--there's no way they're that good," remarked Van Wenda's multi-instrumentalist Aaron.  And there appears to be no chance to see the adversaries play together anytime soon. "If those punks show up at a Van Wenda show, tell them they're gonna get their ass kicked," Dave added.
